Sub-Saharan Africa is disproportionately affected by desertification, land degradation, and drought. The continent’s drylands urgently need to be restored to help communities adapt to the climate crisis and build resilient and sustainable food systems. Small-scale farmers, women, youth and Indigenous Peoples are the most vulnerable to the impacts of unsustainable land use practices. However, they can play a crucial role in restoring if granted secure land tenure rights. This session will highlight the importance of tenure security to restoring landscapes, protecting biodiversity, and shielding livelihoods from the effects of the climate crisis.

The Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) is the world’s largest knowledge-led platform on integrated land use, dedicated to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Climate Agreement. The Forum takes a holistic approach to create sustainable landscapes that are productive, prosperous, equitable and resilient and considers five cohesive themes of food and livelihoods, landscape restoration, rights, finance and measuring progress.
